Have you ever made a purchase and the later experienced cognitive dissonance or buyer's remorse? That is, you regret making the purchase for a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons for cognitive dissonance is that you discover you could have purchased a better quality product for the same money or you could have purchased the same product for less money elsewhere. The best way to avoid being disappointed with your decision is to first due some research.
Many consumers, including myself, rely heavily on Consumer Reports for their testing and rating of products. Then the consumer can choose a product with greater confidence that it is a quality product. This however, only satisfies half of the equation. The consumer now knows the relative quality of the product they want to purchase but they do not yet know where they can find the best price.
The second half of the equation requires additional research on the part of the consumer. The internet is an invaluable tool when it comes to comparison shopping. You can compare the price of the product you desire without ever leaving the comfort of your home. You can then decide to purchase it online (for convenience) or drive to the retailer that offers the best price.
This article will hopefully help you in making a decision on which stroller to purchase for your new baby or babies. I use Consumer Reports' ratings for the relative quality rating of the strollers and add my own price comparison research to assist in your decision.
Guide to the Ratings
Overall score is based primarily on performance, maneuverability (all-terrain strollers), ease of use, and safety. Performance is panelists' impression of ease of pushing and maneuvering on varied terrain while walking (all-terrain strollers) or running (jogging strollers). Ease of use is primarily based on ease of safety harness use, folding and unfolding, adjusting backrest, lifting, carrying, and engaging wheel brakes. Safety for each stroller was assessed by testing for compliance with ASTM F 833-05a voluntary standard and a stability test designed by Consumers Union.
Strollers that did not meet the standard or had relatively lower stability on an adjustable inclined plane were downgraded. Price is approximate retail for stroller. Maneuverability was assessed by trained staffers on how well the strollers maneuvered S-turns through cones, narrow sections, grass, dirt trails, uphill, downhill, and steps while walking. Durability was assessed by rolling the strollers 19 miles over 150,000 bumps with a 40 pound bag in the seat, then each stroller was folded and unfolded 10 times to check for mechanical failure or unusual wear.

So you're considering buying a ride on car for your child. Congratulations! These cars are one of the most popular toys on the market today and if you choose the right car you will give your child hours of safe, endless fun and encourage a healthier lifestyle as they will be spending many hours in the fresh air! At the same time, you will also help them to improve their motor skills. Before purchasing one of these fabulous cars for your child you need to know the main differences. This article will help you make the right decision.
There are many different ride on cars on the market today but the fundamental difference between them is that some are pedal powered and some are battery powered.
Pedal Cars: Pedal cars come in 2 options push pedal and rotary pedal. Push pedal use a stirrup style pedal where the child alternately pushes each pedal. Rotary pedal cars are similar to a bicycle and usually use a chain. If you decide to choose a chain driven pedal car always ensure the chain is covered inside the car so the child cannot get caught up in it or get grease on his clothes.
Also there is no foot plate, this allows the child to push the pedal car along with their feet if they prefer. This is of course ideal for smaller children that may not be able to reach the pedals yet or have the ability to pedal their car.
Pedal Cars are a great way of encouraging your child to get lots of fresh air and plenty of exercise. There are no batteries to recharge and they tend to be cheaper than battery ride on cars. Pedal cars are good to ride on flat surfaces and tarmac.
Battery Powered Cars: Battery powered cars are faster than their pedal car counterparts. 6 volt versions travel at speeds of approximately 3mph/5kh (about an adult's walking pace); 12 volt versions can travel at speeds up to 5mph/8kh (about an adult's jogging pace). The battery usually lasts for approximately 1 and a half to 2 hours before it needs recharging.
6 volt versions run well on hard flat surfaces but are capable of running on grass, although the speed would be affected dependent on the length of the grass and if there are any slopes to contend with.
12 volt versions tend to be more suitable for older children, having the extra power needed for a heavier child. They can run on most surfaces including grass and gravel (if the vehicle is to be run mainly on grass a 12 volt is probably the best option).
Many battery powered ride on cars have progressive acceleration which means the more the child puts their foot down the faster it will go (up to the maximum 5mph/8kh). This makes for a more realistic experience for the child. Also once the child removes their foot from the accelerator the car will stop.
Other things to consider: When buying kids cars it is better to pick one that is either fully assembled or requires almost no assembly. Some lesser-quality cars have to be assembled when they arrive and the instructions are not always easy to understand!
Whether you buy a pedal powered or battery powered version of these cars, one thing you want to be sure of is that these cars are safe and built to high standards. For cars produced in Europe they should display the CE mark. You will then be safe in the knowledge that the car you buy for your child has passed all the safety standards required and will be sturdily made and capable of withstanding the rough and tumble these cars may receive.
If you follow the above advice you are sure to find a ride on car that is suitable for your child, ensuring they will have years of fun!

If you are someone who is interested in having a little more luck in the dating scene, and if you want to make sure that you are able to get the results that you want, you may be considering pheromones as something that can help you out. It is true that people respond to pheromones and finding the right pheromones can be important when you are planning a big night. However, getting the right pheromones can be fairly trick, so take a look at what is out there. What does Athena Pheromones offer and what should you know before you buy?
About
What kind of results are you supposed to be able to get from Athena Pheromones? Like many other pheromones on the market, you will find that they promise to increase your sex appeal to women. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee from the manufacturer on the results. Similarly, you will find that Athena Pheromones are meant to last for six hours, so long as adverse conditions like smoky rooms and excess perspiration is not an issue.
Ease of Use
One of the advantages that Athena Pheromones does have is that it is easy to use. With this product, you are looking at a pheromone that has been suspended in an oil, and that makes it quite simple to apply to the pulse points of the wrist and neck. The warmth of the skin there makes diffusion of the pheromone fairly simple and you will discover that reapplication from the attractive glass bottle is quite simple.
Effectiveness
While pheromones are not meant to work in a vacuum, there has been some disappointment in the results that are provided by this product. It does have a fairly interesting background in that it was developed by a professor in biology, but the results in the field have been mixed. Take some time and make sure that you consider what your expectations are. While some people do react differently to different types of pheromones, you will find that you need to decide for yourself whether this is the right for you.
Conclusion
The results are mixed and with the high price, you will find that there may be other options out there that suit you. Take some time to learn more about this product and consider what your past experiences have been; the more you know before you invest, the better off you are going to be!
Athena PheromonesIt is frustrating enough for the parents when an infant won't stop crying, so for a babysitter with far less experience, it can actually bring her to tears. If you are a babysitter, nanny, or other childcare provider who often cares for infants, or even if you are a new parent, here is a list of possible reasons why baby won't stop crying and what to do to calm her:
When you are dealing with a crying baby, look at the time. Is it anywhere near feeding time? If it is within half an hour, try the bottle. Baby's schedules change so often as they grow that their needs can actually change overnight. Crying babies are usually trying to tell you something and it could be something as simple as "I am tired." If it is not anywhere near feeding time, check to see if it could be close to nap time. If so, you could try rocking the baby for a few minutes and putting him down for a nap. Is the baby's diaper wet or soiled? If so, change it, even if the parent said the baby should not need her diaper changed until after her nap. This is not always something that can be predicted! A crying baby might just need to burp. Hold the baby upright against your chest with his head just above your shoulder and pat his back gently. Trapped gas is very painful for a baby, but once it is released the baby usually quiets down immediately. Another position that may help baby to release gas is to lay him across your lap and rub his back. Try distracting a crying baby by blowing raspberries, making silly sounds, dancing around, or making funny faces. Sometimes babies just want to be held. If the baby is in an exersaucer, bouncy seat, or swing, try picking her up and holding her. If baby was lying on the floor or in a stationary device, try moving him to a vibrating chair or swing. Try the swing at different speeds if it has several settings, to see if he has a preference. Lots of babies like motion when they are being held. Try bouncing her very gently by bending your knees slightly and straightening them while holding her, or walk around with her and pat her pack. Occasionally, you may need to combine all of these by holding the baby upright, walking around, very gently bouncing her and patting her back. Try adding humming or singing to her as well. Some babies want to be held but do not want to be cradled or have their face in your shoulder. Many babies prefer to be held facing outward from your body. Try holding the baby with his back against your chest or stomach, one arm around his torso and the other supporting his bottom through his legs. Babies are curious and want to see everything! A crying baby may just be bored. (Warning - this is NOT an appropriate position to hold very young infants that still need their head supported.) Does baby use a pacifier? Some babies just have a fussy time of day, when not much makes them happy and the baby won't stop crying even after you have tried all of the suggestions above. If this is the case, hopefully the parents have left you with some ideas of what to do to make baby happy or strategies for dealing with it. If the baby uses a pacifier, this may be all it takes to quiet her down. Many babies just go through what is called a "strange period" where they cry and scream if anyone other than the immediate family or a very familiar person tries to hold them or talk to them. In this case, if the baby has older siblings, you may want to employ their help by asking them to talk to the baby or to play nearby so the baby can hear and/or see them. While a crying baby may be a bored baby, he may also be an overstimulated baby. If the baby has a "sound machine" or "white noise machine" try rocking him or holding him in the room with the machine turned on and the lights dimmed. If he does not have a sound machine, a fan, vacuum, washing machine or dryer, or dishwasher will work just as well. If the baby is a newborn, you could try swaddling her to see if that helps. Many newborns like the secure feeling of being wrapped up warm and snug. Experts say it reminds them of being in the womb. Parents usually know when their baby is teething. Hopefully if this is the case, the parents have left you with teething rings and other paraphernalia for teething babies. Sometimes when a baby won't stop crying it is simply because he is uncomfortable. Touch the back of the baby's neck to see if he is too hot or too cold. Then add or remove a layer of clothes accordingly. Try removing all of baby's clothes to see if perhaps her diaper is too tight or clothes may be digging into her or irritating her skin. If you are experienced with bathing babies, give him a warm soothing bath. A ride in the car or a ride in the stroller is calming to many babies. It may take a few minutes for a crying baby to quiet down and she may start to cry again whenever the car or stroller stops, but most babies settle down after a little while. Try a bottle even if it is not anywhere near feeding time. Most babies will not always be on an exact schedule for eating. If they ate a little more at their last feeding then they might not eat again for a while past their next scheduled feeding, and if they did not eat enough then they may be hungry sooner. Could baby be ill? Check the baby's temperature to see if it is above normal and call the parents or pediatrician if you are concerned.
When dealing with a crying baby, remember to try to "keep your cool." Babies can often sense when you are upset or stressed which can make the baby cry even more. Keep trying the suggestions above until the baby stops crying or the parents come home! NEVER shake a baby. If you are the parent and have tried all the suggestions above, take turns with your spouse holding the baby to help prevent either one of you from getting too upset.
If you find yourself getting really upset, frustrated, and angry because the baby won't stop crying and you have tried all the suggestions above, then try putting the baby in her crib where she is safe, and step out of the room for a few minutes. Take a few deep breaths and think about all the things you have tried to be sure you have not missed anything.
If you are the babysitter and have tried everything and feel like you are losing your patience, give the parents a call. They may be able to give you other suggestions over the phone if they know of something in particular that usually quiets their baby or makes him happy. If you are unable to soothe the crying baby, you may ask the parents to come home as a last resort. But, often times the baby will quiet down by the time the parents get back depending on how far away they are.
The most important thing you can do when the baby will not stop crying is to stay calm yourself and remind yourself that the baby will not cry forever (even though it may seem like that sometimes)!
Crying Baby - Tips on How to Stop a Baby From CryingBattery ride on cars are one of the most fun toys that you can buy for your kids. They're great to look at, they're fun to drive, and they stimulate our kids creativity. Children love to imitate their parents and other people around them and being able to drive their very own car is incredibly exciting for them. Look out because their new ride on cars will give them an avenue to cruise around the neighborhood in style.
There are three different types and speeds of battery ride on cars; 6 volt, 12 volt, and 24 volt. The 6 volt and 12 volt versions are very reasonably priced and safety conscious. They're great for toddlers, preschoolers, and younger school aged children.
The 6 volt ride on cars run at a very safe 1.5 to 2 mph. This is the perfect speed for toddlers who are just learning to drive and steer. Most of these models have an automatic break feature and will stop as soon as your child takes their foot off of the pedal.
The 12 volt cars operate at 2 different speeds, normally 2.5 mph and 5 mph. The automatic lock feature enables you to set the speed at the lower setting only. This is perfect for those kids who are still a little unsure of driving.
The following are the top 3 battery ride on cars in the 6 volt and 12 volt varieties:
Lightning McQueen Power Wheels
Lightning McQueen is that feisty little red car from the movie Cars. Kids love race cars and this one is adorable. This sporty little one seater has a 6 volt battery and travels both forward and in reverse. This car is so cute that it will draw attention no matter where it goes.
Kid Trax C6 Corvette
If you're a Corvette lover or owner than you'll love the Corvette ride on cars. Corvettes are the ultimate in style, they're sleek in design, and they have great features. This red convertible is 12 volt and travels in two speeds. It's got a durable steel frame, chrome rims, and makes very realist shifting sounds.
Kid Trax Girls Corvette
Yes, the Corvette even comes in a style for the girls so they can travel in style too! This sporty purple ride will make your girls feel like the princesses that they are. This fun car has the same features as the red convertible, it's just a different color.
Battery ride on cars for toddlers are fun, stylish, and interactive. Your kids will love filling up their summer afternoons riding around the neighborhood in their new rides.
Top 3 Battery Ride on Cars For ToddlersIf you are looking for a lightweight stroller travel system, you may be surprised at the range of travel system strollers for girls and boys that are available in the market.
Try To Keep It Light
Most parents are interested to find the best solution and product when it comes to bringing their precious one around. Now the best and most convenient may not be the most affordable so you will have to weigh that option when it comes to choosing a suitable lightweight stroller travel system. There are a few in the market that are especially designed for parents who are always on the go or need to travel on a regular basis with their baby. We all know that airports can be quite a mad house especially if your flight is delayed during peak season. For the many parents who have to travel with their babies, it can be quite a nightmare as they have to carry their baby along with their baby seat wherever they move around in the airport. If you are thinking of renting cars, some parents even have to end up renting baby seats or baby car seats as well!
Suggested Lightweight Travel System Strollers
So if you have to travel, there are a few models of travel system strollers for girls and boys that I would recommend. Ones that are not going to give you a backache or weigh a tonne. The GoGo Babyz Kidz Travelmate happens to be one of them as it only weighs 5 pounds and parents can easily wheel their baby around without having to worry about an additional baby stroller to bring along. Your baby will be able to sleep comfortably in this baby seat and parents can even bring it into any car as a baby car seat or on the airplane. Another reliable model to consider would be the Infant Cruizer AT which is also made by the same manufacturer. This is slightly a bit heavier but your infant will definitely enjoy the ride and so will you as you get to wheel them in and out of airports to the car and wherever you wish to go.
Convenient Designs
Both models that I have suggested offer parents the convenience of bringing the entire baby seat into the car after wheeling your baby around. It also offers an easy transition when you can just bring the entire baby car seat on to the road instead of worrying about an additional baby stroller to lock it on to. The convenient designs also do not lack in safety features. Both models are extremely comfortable for your infant to be in.
Summary
When considering to get any travel system strollers for girls or boys, parents will heave a sigh of relief if they could get their hands on something that is both light as well as convenient for them to bring their loved ones around safely and easily. One that will not take up much space as well.
Travel System Strollers For Girls And Boys - Lightweight and ConvenientIf you have two children who are about the same age, two children who will benefit from a really cool stroller, and if you are looking for a stroller that will make your strolls quite enjoyable... then you should take a close look at the Joovy Caboose stroller.
I just got back from vacation with my seven year old daughter. While on vacation I drove my daughter nuts because I kept stopping parents to ask them about their strollers. I was intrigued with the latest stroller designs and features... What will they think of next?
One stroller in particular caught my eye - the Joovy Caboose, sit and stand, stroller. I was already familiar with Joovy, the stroller manufacturer from Texas who is known for their high quality and innovative designs - but I've never seen the Caboose stroller in action - until now.
The Caboose is what I would call a stroller and a half. It's not as big, bulky or heavy as double strollers - it's ideal for parents who have two stroller-aged children, i.e., a two year old and a four year old.
The Caboose has the capability to accommodate a wide variety of infant car seats. The list of compatible infant car seats is actually quite impressive. And the rear seat, a jump seat, is quite innovative - it folds down to accommodate a child or a toddler who is tired of walking or standing. If your child wants to get a better view while ridding on their 'chariot' or if your child is simply tired of facing backwards, the jump-seat folds up and out of the way so he or she can stand on the Caboose footboard / platform. The Joovy Caboose has handles, a strong platform and a safety strap that ensures a safe ride for your standing child.
Oh how I wish I had this five years ago. My daughter would have absolutely loved to stand on the back of the Caboose. I can't tell you how many times I pushed an empty stroller while carrying my fidgety daughter.
Okay, the stroller looks great, it's lighter than conventional double strollers, one of your children can sit or stand and the front seat of the Caboose is ideal for either infants or children alike. So what? Why should you get excited about the Caboose stroller? Good question, let me tell you what I learned in my parent interviews.
The Joovy Caboose makes it easy for parents with multiple children to get out. That's it. "Getting out to stroll, going shopping and running errands is no longer a burden" one mother told me. Another mother said that "The Caboose stroller keeps everyone happy and it's easy to fold, pack, store and transport". And finally, a proud dad told me "the Caboose stroller removes the fuss, my children and I look forward to our Caboose rides."
Why should you buy this stroller?
You should buy this stroller if you have two children and you are looking for a practical alternative to big, clunky double strollers. You should buy this stroller if you find yourself carrying your four year old in one arm... while pushing your stroller with your free hand. And you should buy this stroller if your older child is too big to sit... but not big enough to go the distance.
Why should you 'not' buy this stroller?
If you have two infants or two toddlers and you need two full-featured seats - i.e., if you need to attach two infant car seats.
Other Strollers to consider
The Peg Perego Duette SW stroller - The Ferrari of strollers... The Duette holds two children and drives like a dream, it has large wheels, all-wheel suspension, rear brakes, adjustable, forward and / or rear facing, seats, and it includes a steering wheel for unprecedented maneuverability.
Graco Quattro Tour Duo - Is a tandem dual stroller has seats that accommodate 2 infant car seats. The seats can be adjusted to face forwards or backwards and the rear seat is elevated for a theater-like view for the rear passenger. And finally, the rear seat reclines for sleepy your child.
Joovy Big Caboose - Sports the same functionality as the Caboose, but the Big Caboose is for parents who have 3 stroller-aged children.
Joovy Kooper - A single, lightweight, stroller from Joovy. You get the same high quality and innovative design that Joovy delivers with the Caboose - in a single, lightweight form factor.
Joovy Caboose Stroller ReviewIf you are about to have your firstborn, any parent probably knows that finding the right seat for their child is going to be one of the biggest things you do. There are car reviews in abundance everywhere, right? Except that many reviews are actually difficult to read and may be missing key components to the review that you do not really know about.
Finding good convertible seats reviews is vital to helping make the right decision for your child's safety, so it helps to know what you are looking for. With all the different brands and models out there, it can be hard to tell which is which. Always make sure that you do plenty of research before hand, from checking with your pediatrician to see if they are aware of any changes or recalls that might have happened for popular seats.
But what do you need to know when you are looking at the convertible baby seat reviews out there?
First of all, know what seat you need for the child. If your child is smaller than 20 lbs, then your car seat reviews really should focus on just infant only seats, and then once your baby is more than 20 lbs, look at convertible seats reviews. They will tell you that they are for children up to about 30 to 40 lbs, but it really depends on the particular models. If your child grows past that, then you should be looking at booster car seat reviews.
So let us focus on convertible baby seats reviews. One of the most important features of them is its versatility. After all, children will grow out of an infant only seat fairly quickly, but the best convertible car seat reviews will tell you that this particular seat will take your child from the infant stage to the toddler stage. As good convertible car seat reviews will tell you, you can have convertible seats that face both forward or rear and these tend to have the most features to them.
What should you be looking for in your car seat reviews in safety? Make sure that you see the seat has a 5 point harness, which will be one of the best safety devices so that you have your child properly harnessed into his or her seat. Secondly, look in your convertible car seat reviews for the tether strap. This particular strap is an extra precaution for many, but it keeps the seat secured quite tightly to your seat, and that is always a good thing to have.
Next, look for the snap together chest clip. When you have a toddler who has figured out how to unbuckle themselves, it can be a terrifying experience. This particular buckle is childproof for the most part, so your toddler will not be able to unbuckle themselves while mommy or daddy is trying to drive. Finally, look for the latch-equip, a particular device frequently needed for newer cars. These vehicles, or simply a vehicle that has a latch safety, will work well with a latch equip for your car seat.
Now that you know what to look for, there are a few of the convertible car seat reviews that show positive things for certain brands. The Graco ComfortSport convertible car seat has gotten very good reviews with its safety ratings. It has a very clean record and is less expensive, meaning it will not have some of the additional but unnecessary bells and whistles of the expensive models. This particular model is very safe. It has a washable cover as well as indicators to help you angle it correctly, and if you have to fly, this is one of the best seats to take on a plane because it is light and slim.
Cosco is another great brand, which has one of the best ratings from convertible car seat reviews. The main appeal to the Cosco brand is that their Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 can be used for front facing, rear facing and then even as the booster seat for your child as they grow. It is definitely one of the more versatile car seats out on the market.
There are plenty of other convertible car seat reviews out there, but when it comes to the different brands out there, you should always look to the safety ratings and the reviews of different consumers out there for your best reviews.

You know that new infants must go home from the hospital in a safe, correctly installed car seat. If you ever usually do not have one, you possibly can not take your baby home until you get one. Some hospitals even loan these out for those that usually do not yet have one. There's one other way that baby can go home, even though you could by no means know of such a thing unless you will need one. Some infants which are born early usually do not take to a car seat incredibly well by the time they're ready to go home. If this is the case with your child, you could have to have or rent a baby car bed to obtain them safely from the hospital to your home.
Preemies generally spend time in the NICU ahead of they can go home. They frequently ought to meet specifications that infants born at or close to their due date can do when they're born. Weight isn't constantly a requirement, but your baby should have gone a certain amount of time without having a breathing/heart rate drop episode, have to be in a position to eat from a bottle or the breast exclusively, and should be at least gaining weight at a excellent pace. Some infants have other needs, depending on their condition when born. Some of these extremely unique infants will go home in a baby car bed, so keep that possibility in mind in case you give birth early.
All infants going home from the NICU are going to be given what is known as a car seat test. If they usually do not pass this they will probably be necessary to go home within the baby car bed instead of a seat. The test generally lasts an hour. The specifications are normally that the baby doesn't have a bradycardia or apnea spell, and that their blood oxygen level stays above a selected number. Some infants have difficulties with the car seat and oxygen saturation for some reason and will must ride inside car bad for a whilst. They'll graduate to the car seat ahead of you know it.
Don't worry in case you are told that your baby will need to have to go home in a baby car bed as opposed to a car seat. The NICU where your baby stayed will know how to assist you come across a car bed. You aren't the first parents that necessary one. You might constantly locate them on the web when you wish to order one, even though you could be in a hurry to have your baby home. If so, see about expedited shipping. You won't be in a position to take baby home devoid of one. See if you'll find places in your community or the community close to your NICU that rents them or has them for sale. Not all baby stores will have them.
Some parents pick to use the baby car bed for longer than required simply because they come across that the baby seems to be much more comfortable within the bed than in a conventional car seat. That's fine, as long as the bed meets all safety standards just like those that a car seat have to meet. Purchase new if you possibly can. For anyone who is obtaining a applied baby car bed, make certain it has not been in an accident. There could be internal flaws you can not see. Any seat or bed that has been in an accident need to in no way be employed again.

There is nothing like a baby stroller for convenience. They are compact in size, light-weight and made of sturdy materials to protect baby. Baby strollers are available in various styles and colors to suit most preferences. Many are so lightweight that they simply fold away when not in use. This is a great feature in crowded shopping malls or in buildings with escalators or elevator access. Baby will love being mobile in a comfortable stroller. There are strollers for the lucky parents of multiples, twins and triplets and baby's sibling nearest in age.
You have Come A Long Way - Baby Strollers
Gone are the heavy, chrome baby strollers of the early 1930's and '40's. Baby's new mode of transit is streamlined for Mom and Dads convenience and baby's too. The first strollers were not exactly convenient. Most took up a lot of room and had only minimal ability to fold away. Someone had Mom and Dad in mind when the first generation of totally mobile strollers made the scene in the late 1970's. These strollers grew lighter and lighter in weight while each new generation of babies enjoyed their ride.
This Is The Way To Travel
The latest generation of baby strollers feature things like a sunshade for bright sunlit days and insect screens to protect the precious cargo from those nasty flying creatures during their daytime or late afternoon stroller trips. There are several models that even have a compartment at the back of the handle for Moms shopping stuff. What could be handier?
Check Before You Buy
One important feature to check before purchasing a baby stroller is compatibility with baby's weight. Too lightweight and baby's safety from tip overs may be compromised. This is especially true of older babies and toddlers who prefer the stroller to trying to navigate a shopping mall. Make certain stroller wheels are strong enough to hold baby's weight adequately and that the seat is adjustable for baby's future growth. The stroller should have a strong seat belt as well to hold a squirming toddler in place and to avoid frontal tipping.
There many benefits to wearing your baby and practicing attachment parenting. I have compiled a list of some of these benefits and reasons to try baby wearing:
Babies cry less. Studies have shown that babies who are worn approximately 3 hours a day cry 43% less than babies who are not. I was blessed with a baby who never had colic, but I have some close friends who put this statistic to the test with great results.
Mom gets more done. Most baby carriers, be it a sling, wrap, pouch or soft-structured carrier, allow mom to be hands free. This means being able to do household chores, run errands or tend to your toddler.
Improved mental development in your baby. Babies who are worn spend more time in a quiet-alert state, all the while at eye level with the rest of the world, allowing the mind to absorb what it sees and hears.
NO LUGGING AROUND A BULKY CAR SEAT
Baby feels more secure, resulting in a well adjusted and "calm" toddler later to become an independent child.
Helps moms deal with the Baby Blues. The contact with your baby fosters bonding and helps regulate hormonal peaks and valleys in the early weeks after birth.
Babies sleep better at night. Due to the prolonged contact during the day, baby is more content and willing and able to be "apart" from mom at night. Although I do advocate sharing sleep with your baby, especially in the early weeks.
Babies who are worn in infancy tend to talk earlier as a toddler. By spending more time at eye level, babies observe and absorb language skills.
Allows mom to breastfeed hands free. This takes some practice, but once mastered can be a great tool in a pinch, such as soothing a cranky baby in a public place while shopping or what have you. Slings are perfect for this since they cover mom and baby, passer by simply see a happy baby nuzzled up to mommy, no skin needs to be exposed.
Helps reduce infant acid reflux. Doctors are find this is a common cause of "colic", which is basically a "garbage pail" term used when they can't explain why a baby is upset. When worn tummy to tummy babies are less likely to have fluid rise into the esophagus after eating.
Ultimately, the goal of attachment parenting is to raise a confident, kind and bright child who in turn becomes a confident, kind and intelligent adult. But the satisfaction experienced by a parent practicing attachment principles can be overwhelming. I enjoy the closeness and bonding that comes from wearing my daughter, even now at 20 months old. I know she enjoys it too, she brings me our Ergo Baby to go for a ride everyday!
Why does a spring rocking horse make such a great gift for any young child. Call me old fashioned but I am not a lover of most modern electronic, noisy and flashing toys. I like more traditional toys that I bought for my children thirty five years ago and toys from the years before that. One toy that has stood the test of time is the rocking horse which dates back hundreds of years, and despite what I have just said, the more modern version of this toy is the spring rocking horse.
Wooden horses date back to the middle ages and were used by knights to practice jostling. Later, wooden horses appeared as children's toys in late 17th century or early 18th century. However an early example is a crude elm and soft wood horse dated about 1610 and reputed to have belonged to Charles 1 when he was a young prince. This rare horse is now housed in the V & A Museum in London.
From the early 1800s onward rocking horses became more commonly considered as a child's toy. Mostly built by wood craftsmen, and ranging from relatively crude to finely ornamented and the toys of future kings, it was not until the late 19th century that the production became industrialized.
Over a period of time bow shaped rockers became more elaborate and the horses more realistic in appearance . The carved wood was covered with gesso, rubbed down to a smooth finish, painted and then fitted with full harness and saddle. Even two centuries after knights practiced jousting wealthy families would use these horses to train their children to ride.
Rocking horses became very popular during the 19th century for two reasons. In the wake of the industrial revolution, a wealthy upper middle-class emerged in Britain in the first half of the 19th century. These people were to become the natural rocking horse buyers. The rocking horse made increasing appearances in the nursery and commercial rocking horse making began. Secondly when Queen Victoria gave a dapple grey rocking horse 'royal approval. In 1851, Her Majesty visited the works of J. Collinson in Liverpool and selected a dapple grey to ride. News of her preference soon spread and the future of the rocking horse was assured, and the dabble grey became a best seller.
There was no doubt that English rocking horses led the world. Ironically though, it was an American who was responsible for one of the most important and significant advances in design. In 1877, P.J. Marqua of Cincinnati, Ohio, patented the safety stand. Until then all rocking horses had been mounted on bow rockers. Marqua's design responded to both safety and practical concerns. The safety or swinger stand, on the other hand, provided a fixed static frame on which the rocking horse swung on swing irons.
Jumping forwards until today we have the modern version of the rocking horse and that is the 'spring horse'. The horses body is of soft, plush construction and is suspended in its light weight metal frame by strong springs which also give it the rocking and swaying motion. Most models need putting together once they arrive at your house but this is easy and straight forwards.
Bear in mind that a spring rocking horse needs considerably more space than a Play Station so there is no point in purchasing one if it has to be squeezed in and your child cannot get full use and enjoyment from it. Children love their horses and give them names and they become part of the famaily. That was certainly the case with my daughter, and 'Rupert' used to move between the lounge and her bedroom almost daily.
When you consider purchasing a spring horse there a couple of things to consider. First and foremost is the space as I have already mentioned, secondly is to match the horse size to the child. You don't want a horse that is completely the wrong size so read the manufacturers recommendations on the website for the right horse for the right age group.
A Spring Horse Makes a Great Tradition GiftYou may realize the benefits of drinking water as an adult, but if you are a parent, you should know what purification means to the little people in your home. For them, the importance of drinking water that is clean and pure is even greater.
Other than being smaller, their bodies are quite different from ours. For them, the benefits of drinking water are similar to our own. We lose fluids on a constant daily basis and they must be replenished. The safest and best choices for replenishing those fluids are purified waters.
We all know that we are exposed to chemical contaminants that cause cancer every day. Our children are even more sensitive to those carcinogens than we are. The EPA standards for water's purity, in this country, do not take children into account. Even though, the importance of drinking water that is contaminant-free is even greater for them.
And, it's not just cancer causing chemicals that contaminate our waters. There are traces of lead and waterborne parasites. Exposure to lead causes learning disabilities, delayed growth and sometimes serious brain damage. The benefits of drinking water that is purified include their current and future health, as well as their success.
A recent study in Baltimore showed that children with higher levels of lead in their bloodstreams exhibit a significantly higher rate of behavioral problems than children with low levels. Baltimore and DC are two cities with seriously high levels of lead contamination in their waters.
The facilities and the EPA have a tendency to understate the relevance and importance of drinking water contamination. In many cases, throughout the country, the public is not made aware of the danger. Many health experts and sociologists believe that undue exposure to lead during childhood is linked to juvenile delinquency.
Many parents are aware of the threat, so they switch to bottled. But, there are just as many risks as benefits of drinking water from a bottle, once again, especially for the kids.
A recent study by the National Toxicology program found that a compound used to create the bottles ends up in the liquids inside them. The compound is called BPA or Bisphenol A and efforts to ban the substance are underway in Canada.
The importance of drinking water that is free of BPA is great, because the substance is used to line the inside of canned foods. So, it is difficult to avoid some level of exposure. It has been used widely in the production of baby bottles and training cups. Major department stores are removing them from their shelves.
So, what should a parent do? In my opinion, you purchase a good filtration device for the kitchen tap. You try to find containers that are safe, but not made of polycarbonate or other resins that contain BPA. You have your children drink from those containers.
Only waters have been filtered should be used for mixing infant formula. Only BPA free containers should be used for feeding. They need to replace their fluids. It helps to flush the toxins out of their systems. But, the benefits of drinking water do not have to be accompanied by all of the risks mentioned here. All you really need do is buy a good filter.
Do the Benefits of Drinking Water Outweigh the Risks? Especially For Your Baby?Remember how miserable you felt when you last had a cold? Can you imagine what your baby must feel when he experiences a cold for the first time?
Viruses are responsible for causing colds. Infected people spread the viruses when they sneeze or cough nearby healthy people. The virus gets into the nose and throat where it multiplies.
What Are The Symptoms?
When your baby has a cold, there will be a number of symptoms. He will be sneezing and have a runny nose. He may have a sore throat and it may be difficult for him to swallow. His glands may become swollen.
He may not feel like eating much and he could become irritable. A cough may develop. He may get a slight fever or have a body temperature of 101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
When to Seek Medical Advice
If your baby is three months old or less and has cold like symptoms, you should contact a pediatrician immediately. Cold like symptoms in a baby three months old or less are misleading and could lead to a serious ailment.
On the other hand, if your child is more than three months old you should contact a doctor if you notice that he is breathing loudly and his nostrils expand out with each breath. His nails or lips are becoming blue. His mucus is thick, runny and green. He has a cough that hasn't gone a way for more than a week. His ears ache. His temperature is more than 102 degrees Fahrenheit. He has become more drowsy or grouchy.
How to Care For Your Baby
Medical experts tell us there is no cure for the common cold. However, there are ways to alleviate the miserable symptoms your baby undergoes.
Make sure he gets plenty of rest and extra fluids. If he has a fever, give him acetaminophen or if he's older that six months he may take ibuprofen (but don't give it to your baby if he is dehydrated or continuously vomiting).
If your child has a cough and is under three years old, don't give him a cough suppressing medicine unless it was prescribed by a pediatrician. Coughing rids the lower respiratory tract of mucus.
If your baby has nasal congestion, you can use a rubber suction bulb to draw out the mucus from his nostrils. If the mucus is too thick, you can apply saline nose drops to soften the mucus before extracting with the bulb. A humidifier can also be used in the baby's room to help liquefy the nasal secretions.
Concluding Thoughts
The best way for your baby to avoid a cold is to not have him near people who are infected. But if your baby gets a cold, the best thing you can do is make it comfortable for him. Soon his cold symptoms will disappear and he'll be back to health, that is, until the next episode. But by now you'll be ready for that, won't you?

When a mother is expecting her child and plans to breastfeed, she often thinks that she has to avoid all spicy, fatty, sugary and salty food. In fact she has to give up all foods that make life worth living! She is also supposed to abstain from alcohol: gone is the delicious glass of red wine with a plate of garlicky olives. But is this true?
Well the answer is 'not entirely'. Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a "Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding." In plain English, what they recommend is 'if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed'.
So exactly how much are you allowed to drink? Current medical experts recommend that a breastfeeding mother should not drink more than 1-2 units of alcohol per week. A breastfeeding mother should also avoid breastfeeding 2-3 hours after drinking alcohol. Less than 2% of alcohol consumed reaches her breast milk.
There are some myths about drinking and breastfeeding. The first being, that you can get rid of the alcohol in your breast milk by first expressing and then feeding baby later. There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk. Another myth sometimes espoused is that drinking will increase your milk supply. This is not true; in fact, it has been shown to reduce the amount of milk produced.
If you do drink alcohol whilst breastfeeding your baby you should bear in mind the amount you drink and the age of the infant. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.
Here are some of the effects that drinking has on breastfeeding;
1. 2+ drinks may inhibit let-down(Coiro et al 1992; Cobo 1974).
2. One study showed changes in the infant's sleep-wake patterning after short-term exposure to small amounts of alcohol in breastmilk -- infants whose mothers were light drinkers slept less (Mennella & Gerrish 1998).
3. Daily consumption of alcohol has been shown in the research to increase the risk for slow weight gain in the infant.
4. Daily consumption of alcohol (1+ drinks daily) has been associated with a decrease in gross motor development (Little et al 1989).
I hope the above hasn't put you off the odd tipple. One of my personal delights in life is drinking a glass of Barolo wine when eating king prawns fried in olive oil, cayenne pepper and garlic, using a French baguette to clean out the frying pan. When it comes to eating and drinking, everything is good for you as long as you do it in moderation. So be sensible and don't be afraid to raise the odd glass to your beautiful baby.
Can You Have the Odd Tipple and Breastfeed? You may be experiencing many broken night's sleep due to toddler night-time sleeping disturbances which may happen from time to time for a variety of different reasons.
There are many strategies a parent can put in place to help their toddler to sleep. For example early morning sunlight or street lights may brighten your child's room and cause early morning wakening. If this is the case the problem can be solved by putting up a black-out blind.
This was a problem my son had, he use to tell me that his room was too bright and he couldn't get to sleep or he would awaken too early. The black-out blind was a wonderful help, you can get these from your local curtain store.
Also it is important to make your child's bedroom inviting, something that as parents we try hard to do. Many parents do, in act, decorate their child's room with welcoming colours and their toddler's favourite Disney patterns or other favourite pictures. A good idea may be to position their favourite toys within view of their bed which will make it more inviting.
If your child sees his favourite toys when he goes to sleep or wakes up this will provide reassurance for him.
In fact a comfort soft toy could provide strong reassurance for your child. When my daughter was about 3 months old I put a little soft toy beside her that was always there when she woke up.
This became her beloved toy and she took it everywhere with her. Even as a teenager she still has parts of that soft toy left (an arm and leg) that she simply loves the smell of. A comfort indeed!
To help with the transition to a toddler bed that your child will enjoy, which has in fact solved many a sleeping problem look at the above link at this could well help in your time of need.

At eighteen months old, my granddaughter is a joy to be around, but when she wants something, she wants it right now! She acts like she has absolutely no sense of time. She has worn many necklaces and in fact loves to wear and play with jewelry. One day I put a pearl necklace on her to wear when she got her pictures made. This necklace was not tight on her what- so- ever, but she decided she wanted it off! So I start to undo the necklace - it has a tiny clasp, so it was taking me longer than what she wanted to wait. She starts screaming like I was beating her up. It upset me so much that I start looking on the Internet, to check symptoms of different mental illnesses. Is she obsessive compulsive? Does she have a touch of autism? Is someone being abusive toward her? I check all of these illnesses and more. Thank goodness she didn't seem to have any of the symptoms for anything I checked. So then what could be going on with her? I know from her actions, something is definitely going on. Could it be the little boys at the Baby Sitters are picking on her? She also seems to be way over- sensitive. Most babies cry when they want something, but she screams! She is also very empathetic. If she is around people who are upset, she too will become very upset.
So I continue to search the 'net, and I find that many, many parents are going through the same thing. Many are at the end of their ropes, and my heart goes out to them. I'd like to be able to help them, but we're in the same position. I finally find something that resembles what she is going through. The experts call it a High Needs Baby. The advice varies widely, from CIO, "Crying It Out," which is by the way what my granddaughter's doctor told my daughter to let her do. We didn't care too much for that piece of advice, and it definitely didn't help us. The advice goes from one extreme to the other, with the other being "Attachment Therapy," actually attaching the baby to you and carrying her around at all times, to letting her sleep in-between you and your spouse at night. Most of the parents were trying just about everything, and we weren't far behind them. We have ran the gambit of maybe she's in pain, maybe she's hungry, maybe she needs more one-on-one attention, etc ... I am going to share with you the things I've learned from my many hours of searching. I hope you get some comfort out of knowing that there is a name to this kind of behavior, and you're not alone.
You may find that your baby is a high needs baby as well. Newborns may protest group care with their high intensity cries demanding attention immediately. The cry from a high needs baby is not a request, but a demand. They cry loudly, feed voraciously, laugh with gusto, and protest more forcefully if their needs are not met to their satisfaction. Because they feel so deeply, they react more powerfully if their feelings are disturbed.
One mother says, "If I don't feed him as soon as he fusses, he falls apart." This seems to be a common statement among parents of high needs children.
You can read the intensity of the baby's feelings in her body language. The fists are clenched, back arched, muscles tensed, as if ready for action. They scream when they cry as if something is urgently wrong.
As toddlers they have the drive to explore and experiment with everything and anything! No household item is safe. They're hyperactive and hyper- tonic. Hyper- tonic refers to muscles that are frequently tensed and ready to go, tight and waiting to explode into action. The muscles and mind of a high needs child are seldom relaxed or still. They may stiffen their limbs and arch their backs when you hold them and are frequently seen doing back dives off your lap.
High needs babies can extract every ounce of energy from tired parents and then want more. The seemingly constant holding, nursing, and comforting leave little energy left for parent's needs. High need babies seem to feed more frequently; most parents feel like they cannot feed their baby fast enough or meet their demands fast enough. They do not like waiting and do not readily accept alternatives.
The positive side is that parents who respond to and wisely channel the high needs child, will raise a person with determination, one who will fight for her rights and become a leader, instead of a follower.
Read Part 2 for more information of what you can do, and information about the high need child's sleep pattern.

Very exciting news is a buzz with the recent launch of a brand new design of baby bouncer/swing range by the company 4moms.
This group of moms new there must be something better than a traditional baby swing or old time bouncer as they do not simulate the actual movements we make to put our children to sleep, but there was not. So with a high tech research team and equipment came the birth of the Mamaroo baby bouncer. It is so unique and quite different to other Baby bouncers on the market as it has to axis of movement to simulate the real bounce a sway movement we all do to comfort our children. Horizontal and vertical to give a real life feel of its 5 settings.
Car ride
Kangaroo
Tree swing
Rock a bye
Ocean wave
Other features including great solid construction are, mains power supply, Reclining seat, Built in speakers with 5 nature sounds and a plug-in for your Mp3 player, great for those white noise or ocean waves mp3's, Removable toy mobile.
Available in: Green, Silver, Black, Orange, Pink and Red
Here are some comments from Mums and Dads that have the Mamaroo baby bouncer.
Great product
I just received our new mamaroo baby bouncer today, and I absolutely love it. It is very stylish...it looks even nicer than the pictures show. I am amazed at how it works and my daughter, who has been very fussy due to teething, absolutely loves it! It is definitely the best soothing technique I have found! I was a little sceptical at first and was concerned that with all of the motions that it would be very loud, however the mamaroo is so quiet, you almost can't hear it! If you are looking for a product to make you and your baby's life a little easier for a very reasonable price, please try the MamaRoo!!
Amazing, May 18, 2010
My baby was a baby that had to be held ALL the time. He is a baby that loves to cuddle and the only way to get him to sleep was to cuddle him and sing to him. Since we got the Mamaroo, that has changed! He will lay in it and put himself to sleep! I could not ask for a better baby item. It is a must have!
My opinion:
Our second child suffered with Reflux/Colic and if you have experience with this you know how heartbreaking it is for both child and parent.
This is where a baby bouncer/swing has come in very handy for soothing the little one. But sometimes just a bounce or swing is not enough to do the trick. This is where the Mamaroo baby bouncer comes into its own as it has been designed to simulate the real bounce and sway movement that Mum naturally does plus you can play your chosen music or sound your Baby likes. Priceless.

The initial years of a child's life are undoubtedly the most significant towards their development; and because children are particularly impressionable during this time, their environment and mode of learning stands as a foundation upon which their future is built.
Children need to explore and play as much as possible during these early years in order to develop their creative and cognitive processes. At the same time, parents need to ensure that their children gain exposure to various enriching means of learning - from visual toys for an infant, games for a toddler, or puzzles for a five-year-old - because children constantly turn to their surroundings as a source of learning and development.
Infants love to look at contrasting colours and patterns; in fact, at four months, babies are able to organise visual information according to brightness, shape, and the proximity of the objects. They can even recognise faces and gestures, in addition to imitating them. Therefore, providing a baby with bright and visually stimulating toys - even if they're not yet old enough to play with them - is highly beneficial to their development. Soon, a baby will begin reaching towards the shapes and colours on toys, furthering motor skills and stimulating the senses.
An inclination to explore and experiment is apparent in children just as soon as they can move about on their own. But generally, the one-year mark is about the ideal time to actively begin encouraging the development of a child's imagination and creativity by providing not only various games and toys to play with, but by incorporating things like art and music into their games. In addition, children at this age will rapidly develop recognisable thinking, communication and social skills, so it is vital to encourage them to play with other children in addition to just playing with their parents. A musical game or a paint set can be loads of fun for a group of children and their parents to engage in together.
Once children become a little older, their skills and capabilities become more advanced; they start to demonstrate problem solving skills, read and write, and their confidence levels begin to build in various areas. It is therefore essential to provide them with challenging yet enriching activities to partake in; puzzles, crafts, and sports are among the countless ways in which you can encourage a child at this age to develop his or her skills.
Parents and teachers have a number of fantastic resources and online toy shops to turn to for tools that will help their children grow and develop their skills to full potential. Whether you provide your children with games or toys to play with at home, or activities to supplement their learning process in school, you can rest assured that they will benefit immensely - not only because they'll be exploring and learning, but because they'll be having fun in the meantime!
If you have young children or teach in a school, take advantage of the critical time during which children develop; encourage cognitive, social and emotional development by providing them with a loving, secure and enriching environment. After all, the developmental process for a young child greatly influences not only his or her youth, but many aspects in later life.

With the weather finally cooling down, many parents worry that their kids may not get enough physical activity indoors. The solution to this problem is indoor playgrounds. They have become more and more popular over the years and in a country like Canada, where 6 months of the year the weather is wet and cold, they are a great day retreat for the kids.
The playgrounds usually have slides, climbing towers, bouncing castles, infant play areas with foam mats, and lots of ride-on toys. There is an area for eating food and usually a microwave or small kitchen. Many places have nursing rooms and areas where you can change the baby. The bathrooms are kid-friendly. Most indoor playgrounds make their income from birthday parties and celebrations. They offer party packages and provide large party rooms with all the supplies you need to celebrate. Some are not open to public on the weekends due to their party schedule, so it is best to check their websites for hours or call before planning to go. On a weekday they often have a price that covers play time for the day. Here is a list of places I have been to and recommend in the Greater Toronto Area. Pack a lunch and some snacks and head on over!
Taima Zone Indoor Playground,
3450 Ridgeway Drive, Unit 10, Mississauga
Taima Zone is a fairly new indoor playground (opened in 2009), but has already become a favourite of mine in Mississauga. While there are many indoor playgrounds in the same Mississauga area as Taima Zone, it has separated itself from the competition by being a large clean facility, with lots of comfortable seating for parents, and a great sturdy play structure for kids. They have large party rooms and a wonderful nursing room with a one-sided window that you can see the play area through.
Balls of Fun Indoor Playground,
3615 Laird Rd., Units 15-16, Mississauga
Balls of Fun is one big ball gym. They have balls of every size and type and lots of rooms for kids to run around and play. They have a large play structure, and a small room just for toddlers and infants. If you do visit this playground with an infant, I strongly recommend staying in the smaller room, or in the eating area, as you can get hit by balls there. I feel this playground is more fun for active kids that are a little older: ages 3 and up.
Small Wonders Discovery Centre,
140 Capital Court, Mississauga
What I like about Small Wonders Discovery Centre is the variety of activities and multiple rooms they have. They have a play area with a car track and ride-on toys. They have an arcade for older children and a soft play room for younger children. They even have an area with live pets such as parrots and snakes. This playground offers more than just play time, but also an opportunity for the kids to be creative and learn something new.
Amazon Indoor Playground,
1500 Royal York Rd. Etobicoke
This is a smaller location that the others I have listed, but a very nice and clean facility. It's great for a party and they let you rent the entire facility for your own use. They do not have much for older children and the play area is most suitable for kids ages 5 and under.
Lil' Explorers Clubhouse and Indoor Gym,
190 Bullock Drive, Unit #10, Markham
My boys love this playground. I think it's the airplane thing at the top that they can sit in and look down at everyone from that is their highlight. Again, this location is not as large as some of the others I have listed, but it is clean, has a large play structure and lots of fun things for the kids to play with.
Chuck E. Cheese's,
Chuck E. Cheese's are restaurants/indoor playgrounds that have been around for years. They offer great pizza and fun games for kids of all ages. They are usually busy with birthday parties, but it is a great evening out with kids when it may be tough to get dinner on the table. You can check their website for a location near you.
Try out an indoor playground on a rainy afternoon or when the snow in on the ground to keep your kids active over the winter season.
Indoor Playgrounds in the Greater Toronto AreaWhether it's your first child or a second or third, there is obviously a lot going on in your life to get ready for the arrival of your new baby. One of those tasks is creating the tranquil sanctuary for your baby to call home. I just had my third child, and my first girl, so even though I have a nine and a six-year-old boy, we had a whole new world to create for this feminine bundle of joy. Transforming a room into a nursery can seem daunting but it really can be done in a single weekend.
Long before the weekend arrives you'll need to start preparing. The first thing you'll need to do is to pick out the crib bedding you will be using so that you can match the paint. If your dream nursery has a theme - ladybugs, dandelions, nautical, etc - the crib bedding is a great place to execute said them. Pick a color of paint for the walls that works well with the bedding you are using. Paint is a cheap way to make a new look without a whole lot of work You also want to use a color from the bedding to pick out the curtains that will tie the room together. Your bedding, curtains, and walls need to work well together for a polished look. In advance you'll also want to consider if you'll be using any new molding, beadboard, etc.
You can find instructions, tools required, and supplies needed. Keep in mind, step-by-step instructions on the internet always look and sound easier than they are in reality. The guys that create those instructions are professionals and anything done repeatedly is easier than figuring it out for the first time. Never fear, you will figure it out, it might just take a few extra supplies in case of any mistakes. The point is, you don't want to have to make several trips to the hardware store throughout the weekend, so make sure you have all tools, nails, glue, etc that are required to complete the project. This will allow you to limit your extra trips from 17 to just a couple.
In summary, before the weekend arrives you'll need the following:
• Crib, changing table, dresser... baby's furniture necessities
• Crib Bedding
• Coordinating Curtains. Curtains that do not exactly match the crib bedding, but rather pull out a color or texture from the bedding to utilize on your window treatments is preferential.
• Paint. Use an "inspiration piece" to pick the color. I use the crib bedding and pull a color from there. Often, it is the less prominent color in the bedding that give the nursery the most pizzazz.
• Décor Accessories. The accessories are often what will pull the room together. I like to choose decorative frames, a wall growth chart, wooden wall letters, a rug, even matching trash cans and tissue box holders if its in your budget. Don't forget those extra touches to really drive home your theme if you have chosen one. It's often the little things - hand painted dresser knobs, a few pieces of art, a little sign on the door - all good places to tie the theme together. But word to the wise... don't go too crazy. A lady bug here and there is classy - a lady bug on every possible surface in the room is overboard, and likely to frighten your baby. Just kidding, but seriously, don't take the theme too far.
• Project Specific Supplies. I love the cottage look of bead board, but a chair rail or crown molding can also add an extra special touch to the room.
Now that you have all the supplies ready for the weekend, it's time to get started. If the room you are changing is empty right now then you are ready to start the process. If not, go ahead and get everything out. Once the room is cleared out, the first step is to prime (if necessary) and paint. Once the paint is dry you can start with any new molding or beadboard that you picked out.
Now that the hard work is out of the way, it is time for the curtains that you picked out. Once those are hung, move the babies' furniture into place and it is on to the fun stuff: accessorizing! Decorative frames, wall letters, rugs and growth charts are all great ways to add a lot of character to your nursery with just a little money.
Once the accessories are hung and you have the right colors and textures in place you can stand back and admire your babies' glorious new home. So...preparation is the key to completing the nursery in a weekend. Make sure you have everything ready to go on Saturday morning so you aren't wasting time on trips to the store. Be prepared and it'll go smoothly.
